Two minutes later, we were all standing in the living room. Chung-hee and my mother-in-law were dressed in their bathrobes, blinking sleepily as Sammy ran through the plan in Korean. There was a flickering of fear in Chung-hee’s eyes as she finally grasped what was going on. Moments later, my mother-in-law’s face shifted from confusion to a smoldering anger. Like her daughter, she was tall and thin, with a mass of silver hair that she wore rolled into a bun. At the mention of Chun’s name, she loosed a litany of harsh invective, a testament to her hatred toward her brother-in-law.

Sammy nodded at me when he finished. I went over and gave my mother-in-law a hug, then kissed Chung-hee on the lips.

“Be careful,” she said softly.

“I will.”

She gave my hand a final squeeze and guided her mother upstairs, to get ready. As Sammy waited by the front door, I returned to my office for the spare gate remote, the Velcro leg holster I used for undercover work, and the 9mm pistol that I was no longer authorized to carry. When I returned, Sammy was gone. I opened the front door and saw him sitting in his car, the engine running.

I took a deep breath and stepped outside, the weight of the pistol heavy against my leg.
